Sutured
Purpose
To create the word “sutured” by illustrating its action. This piece is a fun take on most people’s first experience suturing, often using a banana as a practice subject.

Ideation & Rough Sketches
The prompt for this project was to create a word by illustrating its action, ultimately creating a unique typeface from this process. I came across the idea of illustrating the word “sutured” for this project from a personal experience I had suturing up a banana in one of my high school classes. During the time of creating this piece, surgery on a grape and banana taped to a wall were at peak popularity, ultimately also inspiring this piece.
Suture Practice & Creating a Maquette
In order to create this piece, I practiced suturing on a banana to see what types of letterforms I could create using this process. Using tools I had on hand, I created several different iterations. I found that in order to create the letters, I would need to make the sutures very loose and unrealistic, which worked well with the idea of a beginner suturing up this banana.
Finalizing the Composition
After finalizing how I would create the letterforms, I tried several final compositions and lighting options. This allowed me to create a base sketch for the piece and work from images that I took at this stage to complete the rendering of the piece.
