Positive Energy Island
Purpose
Welcome to our Positive Energy Island! It is inhabited by energies that power the mind, body, and world around us. We’ve created a labeled poster that can be explored by audiences of all ages and spark conversations about what we’d like our world to be and how we can power it going into the future. In addition to the poster, we have also created phone wallpapers and collectable cards as rewards for our donors. With our illustration, we hope to inspire whimsy, wonder, and positivity in learning about the energies that surround us!

Ideation
We began by brainstorming different visual communication ideas for the prompt “New Energy”. We decided to take a more light-hearted and fun approach to this prompt and decided to make a poster inspired by a little town - almost like a classic polly pocket toy. This little town would contain characters and landscapes that represent different types of energies - energies that power the mind, body, and world around us.
Visual Inspiration
We were inspired by stylized illustrations of blocky towns inhabited by cute characters. One of our main inspirations was little polly pocket towns - filled scattered with little objects that let your eyes wander trying to see all of the details.
Rough Sketches
Since our timeline was very tight, we wanted to keep the workflow as easy and as seamless as possible. Since we had such a large team, we decided that each team member working on sketches would draw within a block template. Each person drew based off of different prompts about energies. Once completed, we were able to stack and connect the blocks like legos - iterating on a layout we all liked best before handing off our final layout and sketch to our production team.
3D Maquette
Our team decided that due to the blocky nature of our illustration, making a 3D maquette before line work would be more efficient and keep the illustration more consistent.
Line Art & Colourizing
After the Maquette was finished, our team completed the linework and passed it over to get colourized. At this stage, everything was ready for the final refined layout.
Final Layouts
We decided to have 2 alternative layouts for the project - a light mode, and dark mode. The light mode option contains a short list in the bottom left corner which identifies all of the different types of energies you can find in the layouts. If you look closely, you can find the small labels throughout the poster that coincide with an item in the list.
Fundraising and Marketing
A major part of taking part in the Vesalius-Trust-a-Thon is raising money for Medical Illustration scholarships! To raise money, we offered different prizes based off of donation amounts. Some of the prizes we offered were: phone backgrounds, physical trading cards, and physical copies of our poster once complete.
