Ideation

We began by brainstorming different visual communication ideas for the prompt “A Path Forward”. This led us to come up with the idea of illustrating scientific discoveries that will impact our future. From there, we came up with the idea of illustrating a long panel that a user could interact with. This would allow us to create sections between the different scientific fields we would want to focus on and allow users to learn a bit more about each discovery we’ve illustrated.

Visual Inspiration

When coming up with a visual style, we were inspired by “Where’s Waldo”-type illustrations. What we loved about this style is that they are jammed-packed with little details that you could either admire briefly, or spend hours looking at.

Rough Sketches

After deciding on the scientific fields to focus on, each team member was assigned a section to illustrate the rough draft for, with mine being the medicine section. We all made our illustrations playful and fun by depicting topics metaphorically instead of literally.

Lined & Coloured Illustrations

After the rough sketch stage, two team members lined the illustrations and made them visually consistent. After the lines were finished, another team of two coloured the panels.

UI/UX Design, Writing, & Prototyping

After the illustration was finished, Aimy Wang and I teamed up to create the final interactive prototype in Figma. Together, we began by writing short descriptions for each discovery, then went on to complete the design for the interactive elements on each panel. We then wrapped up the project by creating an interactive prototype of the experience.
